In this blog, we'll explore the origins of Spaghetti Bolognese, share a traditional recipe, and uncover the hashtags that celebrate this beloved classic.
History:
Spaghetti Bolognese has its roots in the culinary traditions of Northern Italy, specifically the city of Bologna. While pasta dishes with meat-based sauces have been enjoyed in Italy for centuries, the specific combination of spaghetti and ragù alla bolognese as we know it today emerged in the late 18th century. Ragù alla bolognese is a slow-cooked sauce made with minced meat, onions, carrots, celery, tomatoes, and wine, simmered together to create a rich and flavorful sauce. Originally, it was served with tagliatelle, a wide ribbon pasta typical of the Emilia-Romagna region. However, over time, spaghetti became the more commonly used pasta due to its widespread availability and popularity outside of Italy. Today, Spaghetti Bolognese is enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds, both in Italy and around the globe.
Recipe: Classic Spaghetti Bolognese
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 carrots, diced
2 celery stalks, diced
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup beef or vegetable broth
1/2 cup red wine (optional)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
Salt and pepper, to taste
12 oz spaghetti
Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
Instructions:
In a large skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, carrots, and celery, and cook until softened.
Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef or vegetable broth, and red wine (if using). Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded.
While the sauce is simmering, cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the spaghetti and set aside.
To serve, divide the cooked spaghetti among serving plates and top with the Bolognese sauce. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
