In this blog, we'll delve into the history of lasagna, share a traditional recipe that pays homage to its Italian roots, and explore the hashtags that celebrate this iconic dish.

History:

Lasagna traces its origins back to ancient Greece and Rome, where layered dishes of pasta and sauce were enjoyed by nobles and commoners alike. However, it wasn't until the Middle Ages in Italy that lasagna as we know it today began to take shape. Early versions of lasagna featured layers of pasta, cheese, and meat sauce, often flavored with spices and herbs. Over the centuries, lasagna evolved, with regional variations emerging throughout Italy. In the Emilia-Romagna region, lasagna alla bolognese became popular, featuring layers of pasta, bolognese sauce, and creamy béchamel. In the south, lasagna napoletana showcased layers of pasta, ricotta cheese, and tomato sauce. Today, lasagna remains a staple of Italian cuisine, with countless variations enjoyed around the world.

Recipe: Classic Lasagna

Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 can (6 oz) tomato paste

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper, to taste

12 lasagna noodles

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until softened.

Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet, and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

In a separate bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese.

Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions, then drain and rinse with cold water.

To assemble the lasagna, spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with a layer of lasagna noodles, followed by a layer of ricotta cheese mixture and shredded mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of meat sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese on top.

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Let the lasagna cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
